SUMMARY:Burnside Burners
DESCRIPTION:The Burnside Burners are a collective whose members first met in 2019 when they all attended the ‘Edinburgh Blues Academy\, created by the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival team. The Blues Academy was a great initiative providing inspiration for musicians of all abilities and ages. \nThe Academy ended in 2022 and it was time for them to form a group to take what they’d learned to the stage. The name selected was “The Burnside Burners” as at that time they were inspired by the great Mississippi Hill bluesmen\, particularly RL Burnside. \nTheir main influences are the classic blues artists from the early to mid-20th century and they aim to continue adding more old-time blues songs to their repertoire. However\, they are not complete roots purists and have added more modern numbers from the likes of Eric Clapton\, JJ Cale\, The Allman’s\, and Rory Gallagher along with some more contemporary artists.

SUMMARY:The Butterfly Effect
DESCRIPTION:THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT \nVisual artist Karen Lamond exhibits her latest photo series celebrating the naked female form at Fire Station Creative this August. \nBeginning her career in the music industry\, Karen Lamond first worked as a photographer\, then music video director for artists like Garbage\, Seal\, Lamb\, Dazed and Confused and MJ Cole. This brought her into commercials\, where she has worked on campaigns for De Beers\, ECover and Vera Wang. \nWhile directing these projects\, Karen continued to develop her fine art photography through a postgraduate course at Central St Martins\, while also extending her skills into drama and documentary filmmaking. In 2020 she directed the award-winning Consumed for the Scottish Film Talent Network Scottish Shorts. \nSince then\, she has worked on fine art exhibitions including And If Not Now When\, an interactive sound and film installation at The Museum of Scotland in 2021. Besides her film and sound installations at Wimbledon Tennis Museum in 2022 and Fringe by the Sea in 2024\, Lamond also exhibited her first photo series Rubbish at the Fine Art Society in Edinburgh last year. \nHer latest exhibition draws on her experience as director — knowing how to compose shots of the female body in atmospheric light. Inspired by the evocative American photographers Imogen Cunningham and Edward Weston\, The Butterfly Effect uses muted tones to display the delicate beauty in such vulnerable portraiture. Like the title hints\, each snap of the lens allows Lamond “to capture the tiny fragments of fleeting intimacy and the bigger\, unexpected resonances of these moments.” \nBy placing the female form alongside pieces of the natural world\, Lamond highlights the strength to be found in that which is both delicate and passing. “It takes a second to capture these transient\, unselfconscious\, liberating moments of youth\, beauty and form\,” Lamond states. As a whole\, the series conveys the experience of “a young woman taking flight\, free of judgement\, with the power to evoke unknown consequences in an ephemeral world.” \nThe Butterfly Effect will be open to the public on Friday the 8th of August until Sunday the 31st of August. \nENTRY IS FREE.

DESCRIPTION:THRESHOLDS \nThresholds by Elisha Enfield is our main event for Outwith Festival! \nThresholds explores how shared and private rituals shape the way we hold memory\, feel loss\, and mark transformation. Elemental subjects share space with domestic objects – vessels of both change and continuity\, of celebration and grief. \nDrawing from seasonal celebrations and hidden histories\, these works ponder on what remains when something\, when someone\, is no longer present. The glow of bonfires\, the shift of tides\, the shimmer of glass\, is where we encounter what is just out of reach; seen\, felt\, then lost. \nThresholds invites us to consider absence – not as emptiness\, but as a space shaped by memory and meaning – and offers an encounter: a threshold the viewer can cross\, carrying both warmth and after-image back into the festival night. \nAs part of the 2025 Outwith Festival\, Fife is of particular relevance as its location of exhibition. Central to the exhibit is Enfield’s newly completed diptych\, Tide and Revenant\, depicting the shoreline grave of Lillias Adie\, a Fife woman accused of witchcraft in 1704. One panel shows the site at low tide\, the other submerged. Here\, the slow movement of water replaces fire’s intensity\, offering a third form of transformation: the inescapable pull of time\, place\, and historical silence. \nAfter graduating in painting from the University of Brighton in 2011\, Enfield has since gone on to feature her work in many exhibitions\, both collective and solo. Recent notable achievements include selection for the BEEP Painting Biennial\, John Ruskin Prize\, and ING Discerning Eye\, where she has received both the Landscape and Midlands Prizes. Winner of Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year 2022\, her work is currently held in public and private collections worldwide. \nENTRY IS FREE.

From ancient legends to Soviet-era reinventions\, this talk looks at how festive traditions have changed — and how Ukrainians today are rediscovering their authentic cultural roots. \nDiscover the stories behind St. Nicholas (Mykolai)\, the controversial figure of Did Moroz (Grandfather Frost)\, and the enduring power of celebration in times of change. \nPresented by Daria Antsybor\, a folklore researcher and cultural anthropologist from Kyiv\, this event offers an eye-opening look at the meaning behind the winter holidays and the characters that continue to shape them. This is sure to be a captivating talk!!! \n  \nABOUT DARIA ANTSYBOR: \nDaria Antsybor is a research fellow at the State Scientific Center for the Protection of Cultural Heritage Against Man-Made Disasters in Kyiv\, Ukraine. She studied folklore at the Institute of Philology in Kyiv National University of Taras Shevchenko. Her dissertation was dedicated to the genres of the oneiric folklore. She specializes in wartime folklore\, vernacular medicine\, crisis humour and anthropology of dreams. She is a member of the International Society for Ethnology and Folklore. She created a Telegram channel “Mushrooms\, coffins and dissertations” promoting knowledge about traditional and modern cultural practices. She is a co-author of the anthropological podcast “Porobleno”. She wrote two non-fiction books “Under the pillow or under the tree: anthropological research of holidays” (Kyiv\, Laboratoria 2023) and “Dreadlocks\, battles and steels: two centuries of subcultures in Ukraine (Kyiv\, Laboratoria 2024)”. Currently she is examining the nature of crisis humour in Ukraine\, vernacular healing practices on Polissia region and writing a new non-fiction book about Halloween and its connection to Ukrainian culture.
