DESCRIPTION:THRESHOLDS \nThresholds by Elisha Enfield is our main event for Outwith Festival! \nThresholds explores how shared and private rituals shape the way we hold memory\, feel loss\, and mark transformation. Elemental subjects share space with domestic objects – vessels of both change and continuity\, of celebration and grief. \nDrawing from seasonal celebrations and hidden histories\, these works ponder on what remains when something\, when someone\, is no longer present. The glow of bonfires\, the shift of tides\, the shimmer of glass\, is where we encounter what is just out of reach; seen\, felt\, then lost. \nThresholds invites us to consider absence – not as emptiness\, but as a space shaped by memory and meaning – and offers an encounter: a threshold the viewer can cross\, carrying both warmth and after-image back into the festival night. \nAs part of the 2025 Outwith Festival\, Fife is of particular relevance as its location of exhibition. Central to the exhibit is Enfield’s newly completed diptych\, Tide and Revenant\, depicting the shoreline grave of Lillias Adie\, a Fife woman accused of witchcraft in 1704. One panel shows the site at low tide\, the other submerged. Here\, the slow movement of water replaces fire’s intensity\, offering a third form of transformation: the inescapable pull of time\, place\, and historical silence. \nAfter graduating in painting from the University of Brighton in 2011\, Enfield has since gone on to feature her work in many exhibitions\, both collective and solo. Recent notable achievements include selection for the BEEP Painting Biennial\, John Ruskin Prize\, and ING Discerning Eye\, where she has received both the Landscape and Midlands Prizes. Winner of Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year 2022\, her work is currently held in public and private collections worldwide. \nENTRY IS FREE.

From ancient legends to Soviet-era reinventions\, this talk looks at how festive traditions have changed — and how Ukrainians today are rediscovering their authentic cultural roots. \nDiscover the stories behind St. Nicholas (Mykolai)\, the controversial figure of Did Moroz (Grandfather Frost)\, and the enduring power of celebration in times of change. \nPresented by Daria Antsybor\, a folklore researcher and cultural anthropologist from Kyiv\, this event offers an eye-opening look at the meaning behind the winter holidays and the characters that continue to shape them. This is sure to be a captivating talk!!! \n  \nABOUT DARIA ANTSYBOR: \nDaria Antsybor is a research fellow at the State Scientific Center for the Protection of Cultural Heritage Against Man-Made Disasters in Kyiv\, Ukraine. She studied folklore at the Institute of Philology in Kyiv National University of Taras Shevchenko. Her dissertation was dedicated to the genres of the oneiric folklore. She specializes in wartime folklore\, vernacular medicine\, crisis humour and anthropology of dreams. She is a member of the International Society for Ethnology and Folklore. She created a Telegram channel “Mushrooms\, coffins and dissertations” promoting knowledge about traditional and modern cultural practices. She is a co-author of the anthropological podcast “Porobleno”. She wrote two non-fiction books “Under the pillow or under the tree: anthropological research of holidays” (Kyiv\, Laboratoria 2023) and “Dreadlocks\, battles and steels: two centuries of subcultures in Ukraine (Kyiv\, Laboratoria 2024)”. Currently she is examining the nature of crisis humour in Ukraine\, vernacular healing practices on Polissia region and writing a new non-fiction book about Halloween and its connection to Ukrainian culture.

DESCRIPTION:OPEN STUDIOS 2025 \nDid you know that above the Gallery and Cafe there are two floors buzzing with activity every day of the year? \nOnce every year you can visit and view some of the wide variety of art created upstairs in over twenty studios. They comprise a range of talented makers\, designers\, and artists who are the FSC Studio Tenants. \nDon’t miss the opportunity to visit them ‘at home’ on the 29th and 30th of November – a once-yearly event! You can browse the working studios\, chat to the creatives and see what they do. There will be work for sale too – a chance to find a perfect original Christmas gift perhaps among the ceramics\, paintings\, upholstery\, textile art\, photography\, illustrations\, and more. The Studio Tenants look forward to welcoming you to Open Studios 2025. \nYou can contact a creative at other times for a chat/appointment. Just ask in the Cafe for their details. \n  \nOPEN DAY GUIDES \nHelpers will be available all weekend to answer any questions or point you in the right direction. Just look out for anyone with a lanyard and feel free to ask them for help\, whether it’s looking for a specific artist’s studio or where the toilets are etc.\, they will be happy to help you find your way around. \n  \nFREE WORKSHOP / DEMO SESSIONS ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY \nJoin us in the classroom area for these mini demonstrations and workshop taster sessions. \nSue Crawley is a textile artist and retired teacher based in Studio 3b. She will be running the mini-workshops on Boro stitching (Sat 11am) and the mini Sashiko session on Sunday. Come and watch/create your own. Suitable for aged 10+ \nThe Seasonal Watercolour sessions will be delivered by Morgan Ritchie. Morgan is a watercolour artist and teacher based in Studio 6. She will be providing a demonstration/ class on watercolour techniques to create a seasonal landscape. Suitable for children (and big people too!)
